Hello Richard,

Makes perfect sense to me. I had asthma from the time I was two years old until around 50. I believe that 'using my lungs' and practicing deep breathing using many different areas of my chest made a big difference.

Additionally, adding mineral and vitamin supplements and avoiding trigger foods helped me.

Thank you for writing and for your comments about medicine. I appreciate your time.

An odd feature of western medicine may explain asthma. In yoga breathing routines (pranayama) breathing to produce certain sounds such as in ujjayi are accepted as a useful method of increasing inspired volume. In the west on the contrary such a maneuver would be generally classed as nonsensical for a patient suffering from bronchitis or asthma although so called inspiratory muscle trainers designedly hindering breathing like in the yoga protocols are gaining in popularity. Maybe the western cultural view is due to the medical interpretation of sounds like stridor (see wiki: Stridor is indicative of a potential medical emergency), whereas in ujjayi one speaks the victorious breath or ocean sounding breath. The ethical upshot of this must be that any demonstrably successful yoga method should be taken more seriously than the usual western medical view about breathing exercises being merely complementary and asthma being incurable. Asthma drugs can be tested scientifically, but this does not make them successful. RF.

Seems like every article I read about Vitamin D indicate more and more benefits come from it.

We really have to take charge of our own health & wellness. Most doctors simply don't have the time or knowledge to know and review with you all of the possible things that are affecting your health.

A good source for nutritional information, well researched, comes from Bette Dowdell at http://TooPoopedToParticipate.com She tells you which nutrient for what problem.

Asthma can be very serious. It's a really great idea to take advantage of the information in this article and work on getting rid of it naturally. But it won't happen overnight. There are also lots of wonder drugs that can help in the meantime. You'd have to work with your doctor on that.

Educate yourself about natural aids, start breathing and "working" your lungs and drink lots of water. Avoid the things (usually milk and wheat) that can cause mucus in your chest. Thank you for writing.

Hi Toby,

I hope you had the chance to read everything in the article and comments above. You are absolutely right; Asthma is no fun. Not being able to breathe, walk or move is no fun.

Try to eat very healthy foods and avoid milk (unless raw which may be okay,) wheat (sometimes other grains can also cause problems,) aged cheese, foods with mold (sauerkraut, for instance.)

Get rid of as many possible causes as you can, consider taking good mineral & vitamin supplements, drink lots of water and practice breathing as deeply as you can--often.

I hope this helps. I would love to see you get rid of your asthma.

In reply to <a href="https://www.kathrynmerrow.com/nutrition/natural-cure-for-asthma/comment-page-1/#comment-166">Joe Mason</a>.

Hi Joe,

Magnesium. Seems when we are short of this important mineral asthma is a result. I'm not a doctor or a dietitian or a nutritionist but boosting your intake of vitamins and minerals will make a difference. Tomorrow? Not very likely. It will take several weeks. Magnesium comes in tablets and is in nuts and seeds. A good strong multi-mineral and vitamin supplement from a health food store.

Fish oil. One of the duties of fish oil is to reduce swelling or inflammation. Air passageways swell and cause shortness of breath. Vitamin C may also help.

Vitamin D3 or sunshine on your bare skin. Every time I read about D3, there are more and more health benefits.

Vitamin B-complex. When we don't have enough of the B vitamins we don't function as well as we could.

Breathing. Most of us don't use most of our lung capacity and ability. Breathe deeply with ALL parts of your lungs. Use your belly muscles. Move your chest forward just by breathing. Move your ribs sideways with your breath. Make your lungs move and work.

Cut out stuff. If you are aware that certain foods cause you to feel short of breath or have more mucus so you have to keep clearing your throat (milk will do this and so will wheat and alcoholic drinks) stop eating or drinking them. Give your body all the help you can as it heals.

Water. Drink lots to help clear and thin mucus.

I hope this helps, Joe. I struggled to breathe for years and years. Then I used a strong drug for more years that made me feel normal. But I wasn't. Now, with dietary changes and getting all the vitamins and minerals that my body needed (that's why I had asthma!) I can breathe.

I don't even carry an emergency inhaler anymore. I don't even have one anymore. That's a good feeling, Joe. I think you can do it, too!

Best,
Kathryn
